Taking your shoes off may help make your home a safer place.

You may not know that there are pesticides, herbicides and other chemicals entering your house every single day. In fact, there are more chemicals and pesticides in the carpets in our homes than there are in the soil outside.

According to PBS, "Lead, pesticides, PCBs and other chemicals adhere to dust particles, which enter homes through windows or on the bottoms of shoes. These contaminants accumulate in homes, especially those with carpets, which are difficult to clean thoroughly. A National Cancer Institute (NCI) study found residues of 34 toxic chemicals in household carpet dust. These included pesticides, herbicides, fungicides and PCBs. Another study found carpet dust pesticide levels 10-to-100 times higher than in nearby soil samples. Because children play on the floor, they are especially vulnerable to contaminated dust.

According to the NCI, dust enters the home primarily on the soles of shoes. Although it might seem impractical at first, one of the simplest ways to reduce chemical exposure in your home is to ask family members and visitors to take off their shoes when they come in. Providing simple house slippers could encourage this habit. Cleaning heating and cooling systems before each heavy-use season to remove dust from ducts and vents can also help."

Such a simple step to take to reduce the chemicals that come in -- stop them at the door. Just by removing your shoes when you walk in the door, you can keep them at bay. At our house, we have a rug that stays by the door for people to remove their shoes, and a small shelf for storing them. No one walks on that rug without shoes, and no one wears shoes past that rug--not even if we forgot something and just "run in for a minute".

We have even been known to provide loaner socks to people so that they do not have to go barefoot. =)
